Last Year

I started on this quest to teach internationally last year, 2008-2009. I honestly believed I would have no problem getting a job. Hey, I'm a good teacher. I have experience with a wide range of students, from all grade levels 7-12, and all levels of proficiency. If it's English or literature related, I've probably taught it. I'm easy going, have fantastic classroom management skills, and let's face it, the kids love me. :-) I figured I'd have a new job in no time. I did hours and hours of investigation and searching, reading everything I could about finding a job. My mom even helped out and did hours and hours of searching and investigating. Many sites said that attending an international teacher job fair was the best way to get a job. I considered attending a fair, but honestly could not justify spending the money when there were sooooooooo many vacancies posted online.
I complied a wonderful letter of application, a decent resume, and a portfolio. I had principals, colleagues, family friends, even parents of students write me some amazing letters of reference. I spent hours and hours filling out applications, emailing schools and principals, and checking sites for new openings. I can honestly say that I filled out 100+ applications. And what came of all this hard work?
Well, I heard nothing from most of the emails and applications. I received many rejection emails (many!). I did have several phone interviews and a few Skype interviews. In a few instances I even had 2nd and 3rd interviews. Oh, and I was flown to Copenhagen, Denmark for an in-person interview (more on this awesome experience in a later blog). But, in the long run.................well, I enjoyed another fantastic year teaching at SHS!
Even with all the rejection, I didn't give up. I just figured I needed to try something different. And this year I did.
